The Merlet family, winegrowers in the Saintonge area for more than two hundred years, installed its first alambic pot-still in Saint Sauvant in 1850 to produce Cognac eau-de-vie, and this led naturally to producing Pineau des Charentes. While most of the blackcurrant is produced in Burgundy (“Cassis de Dijon”), Gilles Merlet became a pioneer by experimenting with the plantation of blackcurrants in the place of vines during the 1970’s in a region which had produced only wine and cognac up to that time. The production of a superb blackcurrant cordial which became “Crème de Cassis de la Saintonge Boisée” was the first in a range of Fruit Cordials. Our unique profile of fruits producer & liquoriste is the basis of their outstanding quality which is now universally recognised.
